May Jim rest in peace with our LORD he will be missed he was a very knowledgeable man and shipmate he sure helped me a lot here in the association and with my computer when I deleted everything by accident, he just laughed when I called him telling him what I had just done, But he got me back up and running. So RIP Jim I will miss you

Another heavy heart here as well. Jim and I have worked very closely in planning our Portland reunion, at least weekly, since our 2017 reunion in Las Vegas. He has guided me over and through the nuances of being VP, assembling the Scuttlebutt, and has become a good friend. We were having an email conversation the morning he passed as he once again helped me with our agenda, membership and other issues. A truly good man and shipmate. He is missed already

Sam, I am a plank owner on the BI as well 66 -69 and became a shellback the same time as Capt. Leland, he was a good man.

Bob,
Send me a note at [email protected]

Yes, the captain went through the initiation with us. Because I got through before he did, and there were so few shellbacks, I got to stand with the others and smack the captain on the rear with cut-off length of fire hose. It was not pleasant.

Hey Sam Green!
Hi
Yes I remember QM2 Ledger. Christmas Day 1967 was very memorable. We logged the seas at 40 ft and took multiple 57 degree rolls until the skipper got her turned around and ducked back in the ice. Ensign John was OOD. lost his grip and fell across the bridge and broke his arm. I ran into CDR John at base Alameda when I was also a CDR. CAPT Leland was there for a luncheon. Both were quite surprised that I was an O-5, Hee Hee.

Then RM2 Bob Babcock (made RM1 in 1968 and retired as O-5). USCG Burton Island Plank Owner

BTW, QM2 Ledger was also the royal baby for the Shell ack ceremony. We had to kiss his belly. Captain BB Leland was a Polly Wog as I recall.

Anyone know where we could pick up a copy of the movie they filmed about our trip. I believe it was produced by ABC Seymour’s, or something like that and I believe the title is 77 South. My parents were invited to a private showing as a thank you for all the Ham Radio phone patches he ran for the crew.

Felix, and me recently went sailing with Greg Johnson on his boat for 1 week out of Charleston and I’m encouraging both to attend the reunion. Fiddler & Opsahl, will you be there? I hope to see many of our shipmates there and to meet some new ones....you guys aren’t getting any younger - although I’m still a young Coastie (in my mind at least). Woody
